London Literature Festival begins

It is the first festival to be held there after the Royal Festival Hall and surrounding areas underwent a two-year £91m refurbishment. It also includes a book crossing event featuring 1000 free books written by Londoners or about London. Unveiling of a large-scale cartoon by Martin Rowson launched the festival. The two key themes of the festival are Metropolitan Lines which celebrates London as muse with inspired readings and performances and Saying the Unsayable which sparks debate by encouraging people to have their say on various issues.

Festival boats held up by storms

Many of the 30 boats on their way to Portsoy in Aberdeenshire for the annual event have been held up in Buckie by fierce winds and high waves. However the Earl of Wessex has arrived to launch festivities which include live music and arts as well as sailing. Some of the larger boats – including the Reaper – also made it to the town. Although the poor weather forecast is set to continue over the weekend it is hoped that many others may arrive soon for the event which takes place on Saturday and Sunday.
