Clashes Erupt in Iraqi Holy City of Karbala Before Major Religious…

fficials say three people were killed and 13 wounded as pilgrims angry over strict security measures battled with police. Authorities also say gunmen in Baghdad shot and killed a Shi'ite pilgrim heading to Karbala which is south of the Iraqi capital. The festival Tuesday marks the birth of Mohammed al-Mahdi the 12th and last Shi'ite imam. n the political front Sunni politicians refused to end their boycott of Iraq's coalition government despite a deal by Iraqi factions to resolve key issues to boost national reconciliation. The politicians praised the deal which was announced Sunday but said they will not return until reforms are made.

Sarajevo Film Festival ends

The biggest South-European film festival officially closed Saturday evening. Another 10 awards were given at the end of the festival including the prizes for the best actor and actress the best documentary and the best short movie. Many international movie stars stood on the red carpet of the 13th SFF including scar-winning French star Juliette Binoche who introduced director Anthony Minghella’s latest movie Breaking and Entering in which Binoche plays the Bosnian mother of a troubled teen. US actor Steve Buscemi (Fargo Reservoir Dogs) was also a guest of the festival but the biggest attention was provoked by controversial US director Michael Moore who came to Sarajevo to present his latest piece Sicko.

Festival crimes down police say

Thames Valley Police said the festival atmosphere had been good and crime was down from 450 offences last year. Insp John Relph said: “There has been a significant reduction in crime at the festival this year. “bviously people may still report offences to us that have happened at the festival but at this stage we are happy with the reduction figures show. He added: “The policing operation has gone very well and I have to say that there was a fantastic atmosphere at the festival throughout the weekend.

Woman dies at popular festival

Cumbria Police said Samantha Yuill 41 from Chorlton in Greater Manchester was found on Sunday at the Tarnside Farm site near Silloth. She had apparently complained of chest pains and was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle after being seen by a doctor. She died later in hospital. A police spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious at this stage. A post-mortem examination is expected to take place over the next 24 hours.
