Philly Fringe festival draws global acts

The 11th annual festival running Aug. 15 will stay true to its original mission of providing a place for established if experimental contemporary dance and theater acts to perform alongside a jumble of emerging local artists. In that way the festival is really two linked events: the approximately 30 hand-picked and curated acts in the Live Arts Festival and the nearly 150 rambunctious self-produced artists that make up the Philly Fringe.

22 — This year’s Shanghai Tourism Festival will open with a bang – fireworks colorful overseas floats performers from all over the world and the People’s Liberation Army band. rganizers yesterday promised the most colorful opening parade in the festival’s 17-year history. n September 15 there will be a main stage on Huaihai Road and another three stages set up from Shaanxi Road to Xizang Road. “This is the first time the PLA will participate in a local celebration” said Dao Shuming director of the Shanghai Tourism Administrative Committee. Floats from eight countries and regions and performing groups from about 10 countries and 30 provinces will entertain crowds during the two-hour parade said Dao.
Novel beers a rarity at this festival

Manning brewmaster at Mill Street Brewery collected three trophies at the fifth annual Golden Tap Awards held at Beerbistro. The awards which celebrate ntario’s craft breweries were handed out by Cass Enright founder of Bartowel. Nine awards were voted on by the public while four "Editor’s Circle" awards were chosen by Enright and a collection of beer experts. Manning took home the award for best beer in the Greater Toronto Area (Mill Street Tankhouse Pale Ale) and best microbrewery in the GTA.
Festival reveals comedy shortlist

Comedy troupe Pappy’s Fun Club and Ivan Brackenbury’s Hospital Radio Roadshow compete for the £8000 comedy prize. Stand-up Andrew Lawrence and festival regulars Andrew Maxwell and Brendon Burns are also in the running. Formerly known as the Perriers the awards were re-named after new sponsors Intelligent Finance last year.
