China marks Mid-Autumn Festival

25 (Xinhua)– A host of cinema legends are set to gather in Rome next month for an international film festival Italian News Agency ANSA reported Monday. Among the names slated to attend are actors and actresses Sophia Loren Jane Fonda Gerard Depardieu and directors Bernardo Bertolucci Francis Ford Coppola and Terrence Malick. Ponti one of Italy’s best known film producers has died at the age of 94 his family said on Wednesday.

This year 400 films are on public screening. 30 cinemas in downtown Rio are showing the films and the festival committee has set up free screenings at twelve open air sites. That opens up the festival to the underprivileged in a city where that gulf between the wealthy and those in poverty is wide. Not everyone can afford the seven dollar cost of admission to the cinemas.

What is it about this festival that keeps them coming back? “Good friends good music good times” said banker Ross Beaton. “I love being exposed to all the different styles of music. Apparently so does civil rights leader Julian Bond spotted strolling through the arena during Saturday afternoon’s blues show featuring James Hunter the tis Taylor Band and a roaring performance by rock band Los Lobos making their Monterey debut. Bond said he came to last year’s festival and “had such a great time we decided to come back. Those who couldn’t get arena seats heard a bounty of good music at the smaller venues even if they had to stand in line for an hour to get in.
Mid-Autumn festival charter flights bring convenience

Many are enjoying the convenience of Cross-Straits charter flights set up just for this period. The first charter flight from Shanghai to Taipei took off Friday afternoon with more than 200 passengers on board. Another two charter flights from Shanghai followed on Saturday. The flight takes about three hours.
