A strong showing in Toronto enhances an actor or director’s chance of basking in the winner’s circle at the Academy Awards in February. Jamie Foxx Philip Seymour Hoffman and Hilary Swank are just a few whose popularity at the festival was the first lap on the road to a gold statuette. Who knew what Swank was capable of until “Boys Don’t Cry” premiered in Toronto in 1999?… His acting is on par with co-stars Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem and that’s saying a lot. Any one of them could be nominated for best actor. Jones is worthy of scar consideration for “In the Valley of Elah” as well. ther actors who rode out of Toronto to deafening scar buzz are James McAvoy for “Atonement” Frank Langella for “Starting ut in the Evening” and Brad Pitt for “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
