It gave government employees doctors teachers and other people working in public institutions in the east China city famous for its kite-making the day off to celebrate the festival. However out of a total population of around eight million only 190000 benefited. Nor was it an act of unadulterated charity – those who were given Tuesday off were made to work last Saturday to compensate the time lost. "By adjusting people’s work days we hope they can celebrate the traditional festival with their family without their work being influenced" said Zhao Chongfa vice secretary-general of Weifang.

Blanchett will be the first to hit the red carpet on ctober 19 in a reprise of her acclaimed 1998 Elizabeth I portrayal in visionary Indian director Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Loren will bring the curtain down on ctober 27 as she receives a career achievement award. In between an array of would-be blockbusters and more arty fare from 40 countries will bid to draw at least as many viewers as the half million spectators the inaugural edition attracted. Rome’s film-buff mayor Walter Veltroni who achieved his dream of bringing a major movie event to the Italian capital despite sneers from the cinema establishment and controversy over a clash with the Venice fest said Thursday: “This year is going to be even better”.

Zaino III Globe Correspondent | September 28 2007This weekend’s Lowell Comedy Festival is concentrated comedy packing more than 100 stand-up sketch and improv performers into four venues over two days. By comparison next week’s Boston Comedy Festival which is heavier on stand-up will feature roughly the same number of performers at several venues over seven days. Now in its third year the Lowell festival offers a good mix of local talent – from ImprovBoston’s Thursday night crew (the Untrainables) and Harvard’s Perfect Monster – and a rare glimpse at out-of-town shows like San Francisco’s Stranger Than Fiction and Chicago’s Bassprov. The most recognizable names come from tonight’s “Last Comic Standing” show at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium. (The show is also at the North Shore Music Theatre Monday.
