“Western Trunk Line” wins award at Tokyo film festival

28 (Xinhua) — “The Western Trunk Line” a Chinese movie telling a story in a remote town at the end of 1970s won Special Jury Prize at the 20th Tokyo International Film Festival on Sunday. “I have been thinking to make such a move since 1994″ said director Li Jixian at the awarding ceremony at Shibuya’s Bunkamura Tokyo. “I met quite some challenges in making screenplay but I never thought of quitting. ” “The Band’s Visit” a movie jointly produced by Israel and France grabbed the top prize “Tokyo Sakura Grand Prix. ” The film directed by Eran Kolirin tells a story of an Egyptian police band getting lost in Israel.

Attendees were mostly teenagers and twentysomethings but ranged from toddlers to grandparents. •The performers. Rage Against the Machine and Daft Punk headlined the shows Saturday and Sunday. The diverse lineup included hip-hop acts (Public Enemy Cypress Hill) techno groups (Thievery Corporation UNKLE) jam bands (Umphrey’s McGee Moe) metalheads (Mastodon Queens of the Stone Age) punksters (Iggy & The Stooges Gogol Bordello) and rockers (The Shins Muse).

US film Juno wins top award at Rome festival

The film is directed by 30-year-old Canadian-born Jason Reitman best known for his 2005 satirical comedy Thank You For Smoking which won a string of awards and was nominated for two Golden Globes. Critics praised the performance by actress Ellen Page as Juno MacGuff the quick-witted young woman plunged into adulthood who tries to find a suitable set of parents to adopt her unborn child. “The film hit the members of the jury with emotion” organisers said. The festival’s jury chaired this year by Bosnian director Danis Tanovic is made up of 50 movie-goers.
