Bollywood starShahrukh Khan will be the Chief Guest at the inaugural session of the festival. Minister of Information andBroadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs PR Dasmunsi and Goa Chief MinisterDigambar Kamat besides several important film personalities will attend theinaugural ceremony. Theinaugural lamp will be lit with the assistance of Priyamani the rising star ofsouthern cinema. The Palme D’R winner of Cannes 2007- titled ’4 months 3 weeks and 2 days’ (Romania) willbe the opening film at the festival.

Mark Yeoman of Groningen’s Noorderzon Festival which is heldin public parkland every August flew to Melbourne to beinterviewed for the job of succeeding the current Melbournefestival head Kristy Edmunds whose term finishes next year. It is understood the short list also includes AdelaideFestival’s director Brett Sheehy who appears a more obviouschoice. Not only does he have vastly more experience of Australianconditions — he was director of the Sydney Festival beforemoving to Adelaide — but also he is more likely to return theMelbourne Festival to its traditional programming mix. His program for next March includes the Grammy Award-winningopera Ainadamar and performances by the Adelaide Symphonyrchestra — art-forms that have not been favoured byEdmunds.
