First ‘SAARC Cultural Festival’ to kick off on Nov 30

Aiming to take the nameand understanding of SAARC “out of the closed rooms of diplomatic negotiationsto the common people at large” the first-ever Cultural Festival of the regionalbody would be organised here from November30. The foundational festwhich would continue for three weeks in the capital is being organisedcoinciding with the meeting of Council of Ministers from South Asian nations onDecember 7-8. The main draw isa three-day Fusion Band Festival “Sounds of SAARC” kicking off from November 30which would showcase leading bands from all the eight South Asiannations. Popular bands like’Strings’ from Pakistan and ‘Indian cean’ and composer group ‘Shankar EhsanLoy’ from India would perform on one platform in the festival to be held at theCentral Park in ConnaughtPlace.

It shows a total deficit of $8 million for the year but most of that is depreciation and revaluations leaving an operating deficit of about $1 million. The fest being jointly hosted by the Embassy of Poland in New Delhi Indo-Polish Chamber of Commerce in Chennai and International Cine Appreciation Forum (ICAF) will feature five Polish films till Thursday. Inaugurating the festival Ambassador of Poland Krzysztof Majka said that over the last few years Indian films had been gaining popularity in Poland particularly among the youth. “My son says Indian films are trendy” he added. Such film festivals would strengthen the cultural bond and business relations between the two countries he said.
