Festival of the Book couldn’t get any better than the 2006 event based at Duke University. UNC-Chapel Hill is passing on its turn as host of the biennial festival in 2008 and the other university librarians who have organized the event say it may no longer be practical to pull it off.

Fervour marks Karthigai Deepam festival

TIRUCHI: A large number of devotees witnessed the ‘Tirukarthigai deepam’ lit atop the Rockfort Sri Thayumanaswamy Temple here on Saturday and offered their worship to the presiding and processional deities on the occasion. The temple authorities made elaborate arrangements for the ‘deepam’ for the past three days. About 6000-metre-long cloth rolled together with 800 kg of cotton was kept immersed in about 1000 litres of ‘illuppai’ gingelly oil and ghee in a huge copper cauldron atop the Rockfort according to the executive officer of the temple M.

Bhavan’s festival begins

The five young men had been missing since their dragon boat capsized Friday during the annual races in the capital Phnom Penh municipal police chief Touch Naroth said. “The search began again early this morning and we found all five bodies at the confluence of the three rivers less than 2 kilometres from where they fell into the water” Naroth said. He said the bodies had been recovered after Cambodian police enlisted the help of local fishermen familiar with the area’s notoriously dangerous currents in a search hampered by poor visibility in the muddy waters. “Their bodies were in good condition and had no obvious injuries.

Romanian film wins top award at Stockholm international film festival
