tmpl –>Every summer since 1996 the Silent Film Festival has packed ‘em in at the Castro Theatre with rare silent films and frequently musical accompaniment. For the past three years to keep up with demand the organizers have been staging a winter event as well. tmpl –> Images… The event kicks off with unusual fare for a silent film festival – early talkies. “Vitaphone Vaudeville” is a group of shorts that were among the first attempts to bring sound to film. “We like to explore the transition to sound” Salmons says. Vitaphone was the first commercially viable sound system in movie theaters he says appearing in the late ’20s. Because it was so new the first vitaphone films were just short-form recordings of popular vaudeville acts (such as George Burns and Gracie Allen).

The executive secretary of the festival Ali Torabi said that bands from Austria France Romania Norway India Turkey the United States and other countries would be performing at this year?s festival. He also explained that the policy-making council of the festival decided to not issue a newsletter this year since several brochures will be distributed during the event which will cover all the performance dates and the locations of the concert halls. He went on to say that a booklet covering all the reports and events as well as the special sessions held in the sideline section of the festival will be published at the end of the event adding ?The booklet will help the organizers make better decisions for future festivals. ?The concerts will be held at a number of venues including Vahdat Hall Rudaki Hall the Niavaran and Honar cultural centers Avini Hall and the Iranian Artists Forum? he stated.

A total of 85 illustrations featuring Rumi?s ?Ghazaliat of Shams? and 169 illustrations for children depicting the parables of Rumi?s Masnavi were put on display for one week. In the closing ceremony festival secretary Kianush Gharibpur said that Iran?s art of illustration is in good shape and the festival helped young illustrators become more familiar with the classic illustrators of Persian literary masterpieces. Nushafarin Ansari of the managing board of the Iranian Association of Children?s Book Illustrators also spoke at the closing ceremony. Ansari expressed hope that the festival would be made an international event saying ?This would help us invite world masters of illustration to come to Iran and share their experiences with young Iranian artists. ?Afterwards the jury announced the winners.
