R Ashok Kumar CHENNAI: The International Film Festival of Tamil Nadu was inaugurated here on Tuesday. Speaking at the launch actor Madhavan urged residents to preserve the environment. “People now know more about AIDS and smoking. But they must also know that polluting our environment by way of using plastic and other various such materials should be completely avoided. ”He said the festival organised by the International Tamil Film Academy and Seventh Channel would go a long way in not only promoting good cinema but also serving the society in a better way. Pyramid Saimira director Swaminathan said they would help ‘Seventh Channel’ Narayanan conduct the festival in a grand manner.

Noted ghazal singer Talat Aziz will perform on December 27. This will be followed by three days of dance. Mohiniattam by Deepti mcheri Bhalla (December 28) Kuchipudi by Vyjayanthi Kashi (Dec. 29) and Bharatanatyam by Malavika Sarukkai (Dec 30).
Safer Baghdad hosts film festival

With peace as its main theme the four-day festival which is organized by the Association of Iraqi Filmmakers Without Borders opened at Baghdad’s Palestine Hotel on Wednesday according to media reports. As many as 63 films will be competing for the awards with Iraqi filmmakers participating with 21 films and documentaries. Some of the Iraqi entries depict aspects of sectarian violence and the consequences of the US-led invasion in 2003. Filmmakers from 12 countries were keen to have their works screened at the festival which was last held in 2005.
