Twenty-one films are competing for the main Golden Bear award at the “Berlinale” the first of the year’s major European movie festivals _ which runs from Feb. Contenders announced Tuesday by the festival organizers include Spanish director Isabel Coixet’s “Elegy” based on Philip Roth’s novel “The Dying Animal” and starring Penelope Cruz and Ben Kingsley; “There Will Be Blood” Paul Thomas Anderson’s oil-boom epic starring Daniel Day-Lewis; and Damian Harris’ “Gardens f The Night” featuring John Malkovich. rganizers say they do not expect the Berlin festival to be hit by the Hollywood writers’ strike which reduced the annual Golden Globes ceremony to a news conference.

Parvaneh Masumi to receive lifetime achievement award at Fajr festival…

She will receive the Golden Simorgh for her 35 year of acting during the opening ceremony on January 31. Masumi told ISNA that she is happy her talent is being recognized. She went on to say that she was selected as the best actress twice at earlier Fajr festival and since there was no Simorgh at that time she would like to get one now. Masumi received best actress awards at the third Fajr festival for role in ?Davudi Flowers? and at the sixth festival for her roles in the films ?Glory of Life? and ?Trousseau for Robab?.

Kessim lead the people in a series of prayers in the Ethiopian Jewish language of Gez calling for a Jewish return to Jerusalem and individuals are urged to repent for any wrongdoings in the past year.
