Riau jazz festival with green message

A jazz festival called The Malacca Strait Jazz Green Festival is scheduled be held with support from the provincial administration on June 5-7. Popular local artists will fly to Riau for the festival including guitarist Dewa Budjana and friends Donny Suhendra Trio Canzo Sherly’ Andien Rieka Roslan & Troubadours Zefanya H & the Uncles Koko Harsoe Djogdja Mood Jazz and Jon Gazali. Carrying environmental messages the festival will also present young artists including talented 11-year-old pianist Zefanya and his band The Uncle. The festival marking its second year was inspired by local band Geliga which has performed jazz with an ethnic Malay touch in many festivals including last year’s Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival.

Udhagamandalam: The stage is set for the 2008 two-day Tea and Tourism festival scheduled to commence on Saturday at the Breeks-HADP open air stadium near Government Botanical Garden here. According to Nilgiris Collector Anandrao V. Patil an exhibition would be the highlight of the festival. Among the 20 stalls would be those of the United Planters Association of Southern India (UPASI) the Tea Board the Tamil Nadu Tea Plantation Corporation and the Incoserve (apex body of the Industrial Cooperative Tea Factories).
Chain snatching reported in festival area

Nearly 15 women devotees reported loss of property mostly purses and gold anklets in the hustle and bustle of the festival. Eight women sustained minor burn injuries. No children or adults were reported missing. The police arrested a 30-year-old man hailing from Karnataka on the charge of snatching the gold necklace of a woman at Killipalam.

The Grade 2 Winning Fair Juvenile Hurdle is likely to provide a few Cheltenham pointers with Ger Lynch’s Spiderback tipped to win. Formerly a decent Flat performer in England the son of Redback landed a gamble to win on his debut over hurdles at Clonmel in December beating today’s rival Indian Spring and Temlett. Spiderback is without a recent run but he nonetheless may give likely favourite Beau Michael plenty to think about while Noel Meade’s Silverhand was a most impressive winner on his only hurdle run at Punchestown last ctober and is another to consider.

He said several factors have contributed to the financial difficulties the festival has faced. But Mooney stood by that decision saying the festival board was proud to have provided money for scholarships and area non-profit groups.
