March 27 2008 Trova festival in Santiago de Cuba BY RAFAEL LAM Special for Granma International SANTIAG DE CUBA is the birthplace of Cuba’s trova music movement a tradition that goes back to medieval singers who would wander from party to party town to town singing in plazas parks caves and homes. For this reason every March the Pepe S?hez International Trova Festival is organized in Santiago taking into account that the 19th is the birthday of the man for whom the event is named which later became Trova Day. This year the 125th anniversary of the first recorded bolero is being commemorated: "Tristeza" by Pepe S?hez. It is not at all staged; it is something that is part of everyday life in this city of trova traditions of serenades and jam sessions.

Maori film festival to go on the road

For its third running the main festival in Wairoa will be held during Queen's Birthday weekend in June tying in with the Matariki festival which celebrates the Maori New Year and harvest. Selections from the main festival will then be toured to the other centres and overseas film-makers will be invited to those screenings. "The theme of this year's festival is `Te Karanga Papatuanuku Te Waiata Te Whenua – The Land Sings The Earth Cries ut'" festival director Leo Koziol said yesterday. "As we face a world imperilled by ecological decline and the uncertain impacts of climate change we find it is our indigenous voices that are emerging as beacons of hope for the future of our planet.

Sharanabasaveshwara Car Festival celebrated with fanfare

GULBARGA: Tens of thousands of people witnessed the famous Sharanabasaveshwara Car Festival in the historic Sri Sharanabasaveshwara Temple premises in Gulbarga city on Wednesday evening. As is the habit every year the city witnessed sharp showers just before thousands of people jostled with each other to pull the flowered-bedecked car around the temple premises. Prominent among those who witnessed the annual event was the former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission and former Supreme Court Judge Shivaraj Patil and other well-known personalities of the city. The people also witnessed the historic peetarohana of Eighth Peetathipathi of the Sharanabasaveshwar Samasthan Poojya Sharanabasavappa Appa prior to the car festival.
