Unfortunately the article flattened the richness and complexity of the festival which combines entertainment with the functions of a county fair town-hall meeting and community clinic. We heard great music but also saw workshops on AIDS prevention witnessed Doctors Without Borders at work and heard a discussion of “the duties of a good citizen” presented in French and Tamashek. ’s and Camels Deliver the Fans” May 11). Peter Florence festival director said that although some activities have had to be moved it had not affected Sunday’s schedule. Events on Sunday include Salman Rushdie former US president Jimmy Carter and Fay Weldon. President Carter on his arrival in the town said: “I hope it’s raining as much as this on my farm in Plains Georgia. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they pumped “a large quantity of flood water” from the site.

No one expected the party to last 50 years. “An estimated 5000 persons braved overcast skies and unseasonably chilly weather to attend festivities in Sharp park and to tour private gardens throughout the area” the Citizen Patriot reported. “Rose Sunday activities concluded the three-day festival which had begun with a street dance Friday night and included tours of gardens judging of exhibits a baseball game and a band concert. From that modest start the festival grew into the city’s most enduring local celebration. In the upcoming weekend the Jackson County Rose Festival celebrates its 50th birthday with several events highlighted by the Rose Parade on June 1. Just because the city changed the date of its second annual arts festival to coincide with the November opening of the Taubman Museum of Art doesn’t mean plans for an ctober festival are dead. In fact several local arts and cultural organizations are planning to just do it. What’s more they hope to stretch out their celebration of the arts all the way from the first weekend in ctober to the art museum’s grand opening Nov. 8 in a new grass-roots festival to be called “40 days and 40 nights: An arts and culture explosion. “We’re making lemonade” said Laura Rawlings executive director of the Arts Council of the Blue Ridge.
