MIRPURKHAS: Transfer likely to affect arrangements: Mango festival

Secretary Sindh Agriculture Department on Friday appointed Hidayatullah Chhajro Director General Agriculture Research Institute Tando Jam as the Coordinator replacing DC Mirpurkhas Dr Abdul Rahim Soomro assigned the job last week. The five-day festival begins on June 6. The new government replaced the Chairman Festival Committee Anwar Gondal along with his team and appointed DC Mirpurkhas Dr Abdul Rahim Soomro Coordinator of the Committee while ED Agriculture Yar Muhammad Khaskheli Secretary and 15 members of Management Committee. In a recent move Secretary Agriculture Sindh Sabhago Khan Jatoi replaced Dr Abdul Rahim Soomro Coordinator.

Australian authors to make Hay at festival

His list of agenda-setters includes two Australian authors Michelle de Kretser and Steve Toltz. The week-long event that Bill Clinton coined “Woodstock of the mind” is held in Hay-on-Wye a Welsh town of 1300 people and 39 bookshops and was founded by Peter Florence. It attracts 140000 people and a line-up of the best writers in the world. Mr Florence felt the need to mark the event’s 21st birthday with a focus on what he called the voices of the future.

Speed warning ahead of festival

The festival website said over the weekend of last year’s gathering almost 500 motorists were detected by the Northern Safety Camera Partnership. It operates mobile speed cameras on Highlands’ roads such as the A9. The message on the site added: “Don’t let it be you keep within the speed limit – drive safe stay safe. It was not known how many of the hundreds detected speeding last summer were headed to or from the festival.

Fitting then that when the Edinburgh Fringe Festival programme is launched on Thursday the biggest single producer of comedy will be a local comedy club that exists independent of the Edinburgh Comedy Festival a new event withinthe Fringe which is billing itself as being “bigger than Glastonbury”. The Stand one of Edinburgh’s year-round comedy venues has announced it will double in size for this year’s Fringe festival producing 36 acts across four stages. Among the big four venues that make up the Edinburgh Comedy Festival the Assembly Rooms the Gilded Balloon and the Underbelly are all producing slightly more than 20 acts themselves. The Pleasance is producing 12. Tommy Sheppard the club’s owner said the Edinburgh Comedy Festival was “bogus” “unnecessary” “divisive” and had “disaster written all over it”. “The Edinburgh Comedy Festival doesn’t exist” he said.
