I’ve never been to a performance of the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival where at least one of the entries didn’t make me say “What the hell was that?” but OngDance Company took this reaction to new heights. Picture this: billowing stage fog. Pounding live drums layered over a moaning synthesizer amid Cirque du Soleil-like melodrama. Two men twirl leering giant masks on sticks. Four women in elegant long dresses rush about the stage with fans thrashing.

However organisers are disappointed with the low turnout especially on Friday when only 2748 people came to register. “We kept the festival at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre open during weekends including Friday for the convenience of expatriate workers” said LMRA e-services and public relations manager Waheed Al Balushi. “Despite being a holiday the turnout was very low. The exhibition hall has a capacity to register about 7000 people daily.
