The Fifth Ring Road encompasses an area of 625 square kilometers in the Chinese capital. The fireworks ban only resumes after Feb. 9 the 15th day of the Lunar New Year also called Lantern Festival. Vendors interviewed by Xinhua Sunday said that people were enthusiastic about purchasing big fireworks including the miniature versions of the grandiose fireworks ignited at the Beijing lympic opening ceremony on Aug. “They often asked whether we have ‘big footprints’ and ‘big smiles’ in our stock” said a vendor near the Workers’ Stadium. His shop sells products manufactured by the same factory that supplied the lympic pyrotechnics.

Bart Coddington president of the Santa Cruz County Cycling Club escorted the family ride to Wilder and said the day was a great way to teach bicycle safety. “A lot of people on the ride have never ridden in a group so we were there to provide moral support and make sure they didn’t drift into the roads” Coddington said. Pamphlets on bicycle safety were handed out by The Ecology Action Network to people who came to the festival. The pamphlets are also being given to local schools. Close to 1600 have been handed out throughout Santa Cruz schools. “These kids will probably get to come see the tour with their schools on a field trip” Coddington said. “In the case of Santa Cruz as a city the Tour of California is a holiday.

Race is the undertow pulling the narrative along with both Jesse and Tosha given a choice between compassion and empathy or hate and revenge. At Sundance these filmmakers offer up happy endings for their difficult stories. Based on audience reaction and the talk on the festival circuit the films especially “Push” and “Prom Night” were embraced both for their relevance and as compelling entertainment though box-office potential is another measuring stick entirely and will determine what sort of life they have beyond here. Last year Paramount Vantage snapped up the rights to the documentary “American Teen” at Sundance in a move to put more serious teenage fare into the marketplace. It made just under a million dollars at the box office not the sort of run to fuel acquisition fever. Still if movies are truly reflective of society at large when it comes to closing the racial divide the work coming out of Sundance this year suggests that the generation emerging from high schools today may well be the one to write a different ending.
