This Year’s Under the Radar Festival Gets the Solo Bug

Mark Russell would not achieve great success in a one-man show—he’s far too self-effacing to relish a lone turn in the spotlight. But as both the former artistic director of P. 122 and the current head of Under the Radar the theater festival about to enjoy its fifth year Russell has supported a remarkable array of solo performers among them John Leguizamo Eric Bogosian Spalding Gray Danny Hoch Karen Finley Sarah Jones Anne Magnuson and Mike Daisey (whose How Theater Failed America played the 2008 festival). Though Russell boasts a long and thriving relationship with solo performance he confesses an ambivalence toward the form.

Kokua Festival put on hold this year

us Digg This There will be no Kokua Festival this year. rganizers announced on the festival’s Web site that the annual event held in Honolulu would be put on hold. The festival was created in 2003 as a benefit for the. North Shore surfer and musician Jack Johnson hosted and headlined the festivals along with other local and national performers. The Kokua Hawaii Foundation did not say if the festival would return next year.

China beefs up crackdown on illegal fireworks production ahead of …

6 (Xinhua) — China has beefed up the crackdown on illegal production or selling of fireworks in the run-up to the Spring Festival. The Ministry of Public Security said on Tuesday that in order to prevent explosions it had ordered local bureaux to step up the safety monitoring work and severely crack down on activities of producing or selling fireworks and fire cracks without authorization. The local offices were ordered to cooperate with other authorities find and punish illegal producers and sellers and strengthen the safety check-up of fireworks transportation by road. Fireworks are a key part of the celebrations of the Spring Festival or China’s Lunar New Year. Chinese businesses have stepped up producing and selling fireworks with the approach of the festival the most important Chinese holiday which falls on Jan.
