Vermont’s Green Mountain pera Festival Unveils Special pera Packages

This three-week operatic Vermont sojourn is now in its fourth year under internationally acclaimed artistic director and bass Taras Kulish. The Festival runs May 28th – June 21st and explores the art and beauty of opera with open air events performances luncheons open rehearsals and master classes throughout the Mad River Valley culminating with two fully staged and costumed performances of "The Marriage of Figaro" accompanied by the Green Mountain pera rchestra at the beautifully restored Barre pera House. "The Elixir of Love" will also be performed by artists accepted into the Emerging Artist Program.

Berlinale takes wraps off complete lineup

All three films should give an added boost of star power to whatwas already shaping up to be a high-wattage Berlinale. KateWinslet Leonardo DiCaprio Clive wen Michelle Pfeiffer DemiMoore Parker Posey Keanu Reeves Gael Garcia Bernal and SteveBuscemi are just a sampling of the talent expected to attend. “I don’t think I’ll be alone on the red carpet” Berlinale directorDieter Kosslick joked as he unveiled the final festival lineup onTuesday. He added that at least one of the three guitaristsfeatured in “It Might Get Loud” — Jimmy Page Jack White and theEdge — would also make an appearance. Tom Tykwer’s “The International” will open the 59th Berlinale andCosta-Gavras’ “Eden Is West” will close it. The 2009 festival runsFeb.

Expect this year to be no different as organizers announced the lineup and other tidbits for the San Jose film festival — which runs Feb. 25 through March 8 — during a patio reception Tuesday at the posh 88 condo building downtown. The festival keeps getting bigger with more than 230 films being screened this year (including approximately 70 premieres). The “local” is taken care of by actor and comedian Kevin Pollak a San Jose native who will receive a Maverick Spirit Award (as well as doing a live stand-up routine about film comedy). You don’t get much more “independent” than “Juno” screenwriter Diablo Cody another Maverick Spirit award recipient unless that whole winning an scar thing makes her seem mainstream.

• The Fourth annual Fire and Ice Festival hosted by the Northville Chamber of Commerce will include a chili and salsa cook-off ice sculptures and ice-carving demonstrations. “We have 13 restaurants taking part in the cook-off competitions as well as a firehouse chili challenge which pits the city of Northville’s fire department against the Northville Township Fire Department and we have wonderful works of art being made out of ice” says Janet Bloom marketing and events director for the Northville Chamber of Commerce.
