Ang Lee to head Venice Film Festival jury

The Taiwanese-born director won the award in 2007 for “Lust Caution” and in 2005 for “Brokeback Mountain” for which he also won a best directing scar. The festival made the announcement Friday. Last year’s jury was headed by German film director Wim Wenders. This year’s film festival will be held Sept.

4th annual Pitchfork Music Festival set for Union Park July 17-19

    The  festival named after the influential Chicago-based music site pitchforkmedia. com has been a major mid-summer draw the last three years with sold-out events attracting 45000 fans from 45 states and 11 countries. The music e-zine previously curated the Intonation festival at the same site in 2005.     Lineups will be announced before tickets go on sale March 13.

Florence opera program makes cuts

Florence-based Maggio Musicale Fiorentino says in a posting Friday on its Web site that a revised listing of performances will be listed soon. The organization whose festival is a European tradition that showcases leading performers in major operas also expressed gratitude to the city of Florence which came up with some funds allowing some of the program to be saved. Maggio Musicale Fiorentino does not list which operas might be scratched from the program. But Italian daily Corriere della Sera Web site earlier in the week cited union sources in reporting that Britten’s “Billy Budd” and Verdi’s “Macbeth” would not be performed.

Clint Eastwood honoured at Cannes film festival

"I’m very very flattered" the 78-year-old actor and filmmaker said during a brief ceremony in Paris when he received the special Palme d’r from festival organisers. Eastwood was in Paris for the release of his latest movie Gran Torino which he directed and starred in the lead role. In his first return to acting since the scar-winning Million-Dollar Baby Eastwood plays a prejudiced Korean War veteran who befriends a troubled Asian youth who tried to steal his car – a Ford Gran Torino. Cannes rarely gives awards outside its festival and Eastwood was appreciative. "I will treasure it for as long as I’m around" he said.
