Arabesque Festival Brings Arab Arts to Kennedy Center

Charleston Food + Wine Festival March 5-8

—A four-day food and wine festival in Charleston is packed with events ranging from celebrity chef demonstrations and wine seminars to a cocktail cruise gospel brunch and barbecue with blues music. The BB&T Charleston Food + Wine Festival March 5-8 includes 50 events and raises money for the MUSC Children’s Hospital and other charities. The schedule kicks off with an opening night party March 5 where small plates from 21 of the city’s best chefs will be served. Among the March 6 events are “Flay Down South Charity Luncheon” hosted by celebrity chef Bobby Flay; a “Culinary Village” with tasting tents where 70 companies set up samples of food and wine; a cookbook signing; the King Street Sip + Stroll where merchants host guest winemakers; and a “Cocktails and Conversation” cruise. Friday evening features Charleston’s Restaurant Dine-Arounds where 18 local chefs share their kitchens with nationally acclaimed guest chefs.

us Digg This The 11th annual RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem will feature three films with ties to the Triad. This year’s festival is scheduled for April 22-29. The film festival has also put its reduced-price all-access passes on sale. “Since last year’s festival wrapped we’ve received more than 900 films from around the world” said Andrew Rodgers executive director of RiverRun. “For the past few months we’ve been watching and re-watching them selecting the ones we like and getting into heated discussions about the films we love.

Springsteen whose title track from the film “The Wrestler” was passed over for nomination in the Academy Awards’ best song category will receive top billing on Saturday June 27; the full festival runs from June 24 through 28 in Somerset County in England. Though Glastonbury has traditionally been a showcase for homegrown rock bands like asis Coldplay and Radiohead the festival has gradually expanded its boundaries; its Saturday night headliner in 2008 was Jay-Z. For stateside fans Mr. Springsteen will also be appearing at the Bonnaroo festival which runs June 11 to 14 in Manchester Tenn.

Honolulu Festival to draw 4700 visitors

The three-day celebration which will take place March 13 to March 15 is expected to bring some 4700 visitors from the mainland Japan and the Pacific Rim who will spend $10 million in the local economy said Keiichi Tsujino president of the Honolulu Festival Foundation. "This is a nice boost for our visitor industry at a time when we need it the most" Tsujino said. Attendance events like the Honolulu Festival which bring visitors to Hawaii just to participate in the event are important to Hawaii’s visitor industry said David Carey president and chief executive of utrigger Enterprises Group. "This is the kind of event that helps fill rooms as well as provide an opportunity for local people to enjoy and learn about the arts and culture of the Pacific and Asia" Carey said.
