The 27-year-old festival was canceled last year because itlacked corporate sponsors and was burdened by debt. The board of directors announced this week it’s launching afundraising campaign to raise up to $200000 to pay off the debtand hold the festival this summer. Board president Mark Wade says it’s off to a good start. Thefestival already has support from We Energies MillerCoors andother companies.

This past week has seen the Fifth International Poetry Festival take place in the beautiful old city of Granada bringing together more than 130 poets from 54 different countries. Poets from Uganda and Iraq have made the journey to this Central American nation – testament to the festival’s credibility and commitment to the poetic cause. Award-winning Nicaraguan poet Gioconda Belli was on hand to give the opening reading. As vice-chair of the festival and author of 15 literary works including seven poetry collections she is one of Nicaragua’s big literary stars. She thinks the festival is important because it opens up Nicaraguan poetry to an international audience.

Angels a grinning train Snoopy and re-creations of classics like the Mona Lisa were among the images emerging atop the asphalt Saturday. The creations continue today as chalk-stained artists labor over temporary masterpieces — which get washed away in a rainbow river after the next rainfall. The festival started in 1994 as a way to help breathe life into a desolate downtown. It now draws almost 1000 participants toiling over 280 paintings as onlookers snap pictures talk to artists — and most importantly to the downtown businesses — eat at restaurants and stroll through shops.
