Florence festival cancels 2 operas

The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino said Monday that “Macbeth” had been scheduled to open on June 4 and “Billy Budd” on June 23 as part of its festival in Florence. Last week the theater said unspecified cuts would have to be made in its spring and summer opera offerings because of the inadequate funding. n Monday it said the festival would open on time with Richard Wagner’s “Goetterdaemmerung” and that the rest of the season’s program will be announced later. The festival is a European tradition showcasing leading performers in major operas. This year it runs from April 29 to July 2.

In addition to the Neville Brothers and Sharon Jones Saturday’s lineup will feature a 50th anniversary salute to Miles Davis’ class album “Kind of Blue” by Jimmy Cobb’s So What Band. Also performing on the festival’s first day with be Summer Storm featuring Norman Brown Wayman Tisdale and Eric Darius the Jon Faddis Quartet the Jack Sheldon rchestra the Pete Escovedo rchestra featuring Sheila E. Esperanza Spalding Cos of Good Music the New Birth Brass Band and the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Jazz Ensemble.

Hundreds flew their unique creations over the park’s Polo Fields. ne festival attendee said flying a kite is a nice distraction from daily life. “It’s perfect weather today so in spite of the turmoil that’s going on with the economy it’s just nice to come out and get a fresh breath of air and calm down and enjoy nature” kite flier Kate Thompson said. The festival is typically held in the soccer field at Zilker Park but a new sprinkler system is being installed there so it was relocated across the street.
Taunton High School Drama Club shines at festival

Their first-ever visit to the Massachusetts High School Drama Guild’s state festival was a success this past Saturday as the club’s production of “Growing Up” was selected to move on to the next round of competition. ne of only 42 schools selected from an initial pool of nearly 120 Taunton High will be among the cream of the crop who will be competing in the state semifinals on March 14. Members of the drama club were excited about their first experience at festival and thrilled about the entire day. "ur hosts were incredible" gushed Elizabeth Riendeau.
