Rave reviews for film festival
Sarasota Herald-Tribune
Last Modified: Sunday April 5 2009 at 8:51 p. SARASTA – Stars sang Sarasota’s praises on the final weekend of the 11th annual Sarasota Film Festival which organizers said surpassed goals and is shifting into a year-round operation. Stanley Tucci who hosted Saturday’s tribute to late director Hal Ashby and Academy Award-winning actor Jon Voight noted the community’s enthusiasm for films and the filmmakers. “This is quickly becoming one of our favorite festivals” Tucci said. Those are welcome words to film festival board President Mark Famiglio who said this year’s 10-day event beat projections. “We had lowered our expectations based on the economy and some past history but we have surpassed our expectations in every single category” Famiglio said.

Wisconsin Film Festival: ‘Sparrow’ scores style points

There’s nonutritional value and it might make you a little ill if you ate toomuch of it. But in the right portion it’s sensational. Director To is best known as a maker of violent but incrediblystylized action movies (like “Exiled” a Wisconsin Film Festivalselection a couple of years ago). That makes “Sparrow” quite adeparture; nobody gets shot or otherwise killed in the film. Instead To has channeled all his considerable filmmaking styleinto a delicious movie about a quartet of professional pickpocketsled by Kei (Simon Yam who seems to be channeling Cary Grant). Theyseem like a carefree group tooling around Hong Kong on Kei’sbicycle like a bunch of kids. But they’re also very good at whatthey do; in a beautifully choreographed early scene we see thepickpockets deftly relieve several unsuspecting passers-by of theirwallets in a ballet of larceny.
