com The Big Ten usually refers to the Midwest’s most elite college sports teams but not this weekend. From midday tomorrow until midnight Sunday the Big Ten will be at the Empire Polo Club in Indio where the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival will celebrate its 10th anniversary. n hand will be a mix of graying legends (including Paul McCartney Leonard Cohen and Public Enemy) hot young acts (Lykke Li F***** Up Fleet Foxes) and many more be they famous obscure or somewhere in between. (Country-music fans will have to wait until April 25 and 26 when the third annual Stagecoach festival takes place at the same location in Indio). The Coachella lineup also includes at least two notable San Diego artists among its 100-plus acts.

Set to run April 16 through Sunday at venues throughout downtown Livermore the festival will feature dozens of full-length productions short films and animated features. “We believe in the voice and spirit of independent films” said Adam Reeves of In The Bag Inc. organizers of the festival. “This year we are telling people that the California Independent Film Festival will feature the best films you’ve never seen. “A number of those movies were written and produced in the Bay Area including “The Fenceline” which was shot in Livermore.

There are some definite bright spots in the interesting schedule which was released on Wednesday. This year’s big-ticket appearance depending on your perspective is either stare-down star Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) scar-nominated and barrier-breaking actress Juanita Moore (Imitation of Life) actor Brian Cox (who seems to be in everything these days) or the great character actor M. Emmet Walsh (Blood Simple). If that’s not enough there are also plenty of films.
