In this case wellington boots. No prizes for guessing then that this is the first day of the UK summer music festival season. We’re at Bearded Theory an intimate but impressive Derbyshire event. The unusual thing about it is that everyone is encouraged to wear a beard. There’s even a false beard world record attempt being planned – not to mention a "Best Dressed Bearded Wench" competition.

Now director Lee has gone back in time a few years to capture the party that led to the hangover. “Taking Woodstock” Lee’s Cannes Film Festival entry presents a loving glimpse of the behind-the-scenes hijinks that resulted in the gloriously sloppy music fest. Set in 1973 1997′s “The Ice Storm” was a portrait of suburban families unraveling amid adultery casual drug use and the backdrop of the Watergate scandal. “Taking Woodstock” shows the summer-long buildup to the 1969 rock ‘n’ roll gathering that lured half a million free spirits to a rainy muddy patch of farmland. Woodstock “has a symbolic meaning to me. It’s the innocence of a young generation departing from the old establishment and trying to find a more refreshing way more fair way to live with everybody else” Lee said Saturday before the Cannes premiere of “Taking Woodstock.

Perhaps that’s why yesterday director Martin Scorsese chose Cannes as the place to announce a new initiative from his World Cinema Foundation to restore a number of classics and bring them to DVD. Jangling with excitement Scorsese detailed the Foundation’s mission in light of its new initiative: “The World Cinema Foundation was created out of need. There are so many pictures in need of restoration and preservation which for many reasons are not getting the attention they deserve. And restoring and preserving is only half the battle because in order to be appreciated they have to be seen.
