China celebrates Dragon Boat Festival

Critics of the current Chinese leadership say not much has changed about China’s political culture. The government is still intolerant of dissent and periodically a Qu Yuan-like figure appears only to be silenced. That gives the Dragon Boat Festival awkward undertones. “It’s like celebrating Martin Luther King Day with the Jim Crow laws still in effect” political scientist Michael DeGolyer said referring to the late American civil rights leader and the racist laws that once segregated blacks and whites in southern U. Students raced miniature solar-powered cars cooked chocolate chip cookies using solar ovens learned solar energy facts drew on paper that changes color in sunlight and more. Intermittent clouds sometimes blocked the festival’s honorary star but never long enough to put a damper on the afternoon. The festival was the culmination of a $5000 BP A+ for Energy grant received last summer. The school had a solar energy week celebration last year but the Helios Festival took the energy celebration to another level.
