GRAND RAPIDS — The 70s are back at Festival of the Arts. Friday’s temperature was in the low 70s and key sales were up 70 percent over last year’s opening day. The word from Festival of the Arts is that gross revenues from food booths on Friday were up nearly 71 percent from Festival 2008 and revenue from Art Sales were up more than 79 percent. The festival which was held for the first time in London in 1993 takes place in a different European city every year attracting participants from all over the continent. This year’s Europride coincides with the 40th anniversary of the first gay rights movements in the United States. Zurich Switzerland’s biggest city is festooned with the movement’s traditional rainbow colours for the occasion under the impetus of its recently elected Socialist Party mayor Corine Mauch who is openly lesbian. Ruegg said a “mixed crowd” turned up at the parade and not just homosexuals.

The festival which takes place at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds is in it’s 29th year. It’s now run by the city’s chamber of commerce but that wasn’t always the case. “Back in the early 80s Coshocton Lumber one of their owners was very interested in ballooning” said Jim Nelson Co-Chair of the festival. “They did a promotion for the lumber company where they had a local balloonist come in and fly out of their lumber yard.
