) Despite having fewer music stores to get their music out Lara Baker the marketing and communications manager for the Association of Independent Music boasted: “Independent labels survive because they care first and foremost about great music and because they embrace change and move with the times. on July 4 to kick things off MTV2 will broadcast a 30-minute video specials called “MTV2 Loves…” in conjunction with the Independents festival. The special will feature videos from independent bands from labels like Domino XL Creation Wichita Factory Warp and Moshi Moshi.

At 15 years young the Essence Music Festival continues to respect the past while focusing on the future. Tonight and Saturday in the Superdome artists who came to prominence in the past 15 years dominate the main stage: Beyonce John Legend Ne-Yo Maxwell Robin Thicke. n Sunday the festival’s final night the old school is represented by Teena Marie Al Green Lionel Richie and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. “To mark the Essence Music Festival’s 15-year anniversary we wanted to really celebrate all the forms of music that have been central to the event’s history” said Michelle Ebanks president of Essence Communications Inc. the festival’s parent company.

Rib White and Blue is festival of tastes

There were long lines of people waiting to taste the variety of offerings during lunchtime Thursday the first day of Akron’s Rib White and Blue Food Festival. About nine barbecue rib vendors from hio South Carolina Tennessee and Texas set up stations on Main Street with buckets of extra barbecue sauce for the tasting. The street is blocked off from State Street to Bowery Street for the three-day festival. Besides ribs there are chicken pork and brisket sandwiches roasted corn grilled and fried vegetables homemade fries and potato chips. For those who just want a one-handed snack or drink there are root beer floats cones snow cones smoothies and fresh-squeezed lemonade. Downtown workers took advantage of the free admission Thursday to grab a bite to eat within walking distance. Admission is also free today from 11 a.
