LA trial in Thai film festival bribery case begins

Juthamas has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged in Thailand. The Greens are the first entertainment industry figures who have been charged under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act a federal statute prohibiting corrupt payments to foreign officials for business purposes. Prosecutors contend the Greens paid Juthamas about $1. 8 million to help secure the Bangkok film festival and tourism-related deals between 2002 and 2007. The payments some of which were paid in cash to Juthamas directly were often disguised as sales commissions ranging between 10 percent and 20 percent Lopez said. The Greens inflated their budgets so Juthamas could be paid off prosecutors said. “The simple question for you as jurors is whether all these payments to overseas accounts were bribes so they (Greens) can get the inside track for those contracts” Lopez said.
Fall arts: Welcome to the season of festivals
San Jose Mercury News
No what I mean is if you peruse today’s A&E fall arts preview section it’s hard not to notice there are simply a lot of festivals coming our way. Treasure Island’s got one (ct. 17-18) featuring hot indie rock acts like the Decemberists whose last album was about a love affair between a woman and an ill-tempered half-human forest-dwelling something-or-other. You can’t get much more festive than that. Monterey and San Francisco are once again hosting their prestigious jazz festivals.

tmpl –> San Francisco park officials and promoters of this weekend’s utside Lands Music & Arts Festival in Golden Gate Park have made many changes from last year’s inaugural festival to appease neighbors. More than 100000 people are expected to converge on the park to see headliners Pearl Jam the Dave Matthews Band and actor Jack Black’s rock band Tenacious D. Last year’s 65-band concert headlined by Radiohead drew 130000 people and generated $815000 for the Recreation and Park Department but drew several hundred complaints from neighbors about noise blocked driveways and traffic. “We are refining what we did last year to make sure neighbors aren’t caught off guard” said Allen Scott vice president of Another Planet Entertainment which has signed a three-year permit with the city to produce the festival. The first change was to mail flyers to residents within a four-block radius of the park alerting them to the concert and dates of park road closures and giving them hot line numbers to report complaints or summon tow trucks.
